11 Local-Approved Things To Do in Byron Bay

Written by The Surf House on .

Looking for the best way to experience Byron like a local? We asked Jonathan – a long-time Byron Bay resident, ocean photographer, and lover of good vibes – to share his ultimate list of must-do activities. From sunrise surf locations to secret waterfalls and iconic swim spots, here’s how to soak up the best of Byron and its surroundings.

1. Local Farmers Market (Every Thursday!)

Start your Thursday with a wander through the Byron Farmers Market. Fresh produce, live music, smoothies, local treats – it’s where the community comes together and you really feel the Byron spirit.

2. Chase these hidden waterfalls near Byron Bay

Be sure to make time to get out in nature and chase some waterfalls – my go-to favourites are:

  • Minyon Falls – dramatic views and epic energy (Nightcap National Park, 45 minute drive)
  • Killen Falls – short walk, stunning spot (Tintenbar, 30 minute drive)
  • Whian Whian Falls – a true hidden gem (Dunoon, 50 minute drive)
  • Pack a towel, maybe some snacks, and take the day to explore.

3. The best local beaches in Byron Bay

From the endless sands of Tallow Beach to the hidden beauty of Whites Beach, each spot has its own charm. Some are perfect for surfing, others for sunbaking or long walks. Go beach-hopping and find your personal favourite – trust me, they all hit differently.

4. Walk the Cape Byron Lighthouse Trail

This iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse walk is my Tuesday morning routine – and I’ve never done it without spotting something: whales, dolphins, turtles, wallabies… it’s wild. The views are unreal, and it’s a guaranteed moment of peace (and awe).
Good to know: The walk is 3.7km and takes around 1-1.5 hours one way.

5. Float in the Tea Tree Lake (Lake Ainsworth)

One of the most underrated places around Byron! Located at Lennox Head (about 30 minute drive) a trip to Tea Tree Lake (aka Lake Ainsworth) is a true hidden gem. Bring a floatie, and let the natural tea tree oils soak your skin while you chill under the gum trees.

6. Swim at Bexhill Quarry

Just a short 30 minute drive inland from Byron, Bexhill Quarry is like discovering a secret tropical paradise. Turquoise water, cliff jumps, and plenty of space to lay back and chill.

7. Make bracelets at the Trinket Shop

A session at The Trinket Shop makes for a perfect relaxed afternoon with friends. Head here and create your own beachy bracelets or necklaces. It’s cheap, fun, and surprisingly meditative… plus, it’s a great rainy-day activity in Byron Bay too.

8. Breakfast at The Farm Byron Bay

This is where I go when I want a slow morning, fresh coffee, farm animals, and that peaceful countryside vibe. A stroll around The Farm Byron Bay is good for the soul (we call it ‘animal therapy’).

9. Watch the sunset on the beach

The locals know golden hour in Byron Bay is something special – the sky puts on a real show, and there’s no better way to end your day. Top sunset spots include:

  • Main Beach – Great for live music buskers.
  • Belongil Beach – Quiet and peaceful.
  • The Pass – Perfect for watching surfers ride the last waves of the day.

10. Surf at The Pass & Wategos

The Pass and Wategos Beach are two iconic surf spots for a reason. Whether you’re learning or already a local, The Pass and Wategos always deliver. Beginners – it’s the perfect way to start.

11. Spend the day at Brunswick River

Just a 20 minute drive up the coast, Brunswick River is the ultimate spot to kayak, paddleboard, or just float around. Local kids jump off the bridge at high tide, and if you hang out on a Sunday evening, you might catch the drum circle at sunset. Such a vibe!
