The best Surf Beaches in Byron Bay

The Pass

If you’re a surfer, you’ve probably already heard of The Pass. One of Byron’s most famous and busiest surf breaks, The Pass is a point break between Clarkes Beach and Wategos. This area offers up world-class surf for confident surfers, particularly longboarders. Although the swell isn’t as consistent as other beaches when the conditions are right few waves in the area compare!

Aside from the surf, this area is one of the best lookin’ spots around. Enjoy views of Cape Byron Lighthouse and a beautiful stretch of beach all the way up to Belongil. You may even be sharing the waves with the local pods of dolphins in the area.

Post-surf activity: Don’t forget to climb up to Fisherman’s lookout for amazing views of the pass and along the long stretch up to Main Beach.

Clarkes Beach

Clarkes Beach is one the areas best learn to surf beaches with gentle waves thanks to its long sandbank. Depending on weather conditions this beach is perfect for beginners, body surfers and paddleboarders. If you’re learning to surf, chances are your surf lessons will be here.

The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during summer. Keep in mind that at times strong rips can make surfing dangerous for beginners. The best bet? Chat to the locals before jumping in! If they’re Byron locals, they’ll be able to suss out the surfing conditions.

Alternatively, book a surf lesson to learn the ropes and build your confidence. We recommend local surf school, Soul Surf offering private and small group surf lessons in Byron Bay. Chat to the guys on reception at The Surf House to book your surf & stay package.

Post-surf activity: At the southern end of Clarkes beach follow the Cape Byron walking track. Take in stunning ocean views all the way up to Cape Byron Lighthouse.

Main Beach

Conveniently close to town, Main Beach is the perfect break for beginners and all levels of surfers. During bigger swells, more experienced surfers might fun some right and left-handers here with plenty of waves to choose from. Main Beach is also a popular spot for swimming, bodysurfing and even kayaking. If you don’t fancy hitting the waves for a surf, take the opportunity to relax and soak up the buzzing town’s vibes.

Post-surf activity: Wander around town to check out the local boutique shops. Then head up to the rooftop bar at The Surf House for a post-surf bevvie or two!

The Surf House is just 50m from Main Beach. Therefore you can roll out of bed, grab a surfboard and hit the waves with complimentary surfboard hire when you stay.

Tallow Beach

If riding the waves is second nature to you, head over to ‘Tallows’ on the South side of Cape Byron. This beach spans all the way from Cosy Corner to the beginning of Suffolk Park. Protected from the Northerly winds, you’ll usually find long lefthanders here with perfect conditions for short boarders.

Sometimes the conditions can be unpredictable and rips can be strong so if you’re new to surfing we recommend heading to Clarke’s or Main beach instead. Keen to unwind away from the crowds? Sheltered from the wind, Cosy Corner is the perfect place to chill and catch some rays.

Post-surf activity: Leave the wettie in the car and head South for a long beach walk. The trail leads all the way to Broken Head and offers amazing views along the way!

The Wreck & Belongil Beach

Belongil Beach

Belongil offers consistently good surf for all abilities depending on the wind conditions. Generally, it’s quieter than other surf breaks in the area and it can be a great spot for beginners when the waves are small.

The Wreck

At the Southern end of the beach is ‘The Wreck’. The break is named after the shipwreck of the SS Wollongbar which has created several sand bars in the ocean. This makes for consistently great swell and hollow waves. Generally, the waves can be rough here so surfing is not recommended for beginners.

Post-surf activity: Dust off the sand and stick around for a dreamy sunset over Mt Warning. This is a great spot to meet locals, listen to some drumming circles and mingle with local surfers. As this is one of the only dog-friendly beaches in the area you may also meet their furry friends!
