AM: WHERE TO SPEND YOUR MORNING IN BYRON BAY
Rise and shine, Schoolies! Here’s your go-to guide for getting the most out of your morning.
Byron Lighthouse Walk
For the early birds out there, the Byron Bay Lighthouse Sunrise walk cannot be missed. Sitting on Australia’s most Easterly point, you’ll catch incredible sunrises and some of the best views of the ocean. Trust us, it’s worth rolling out of bed for!
Surf House tip: Keep an eye out for dolphins as they can be pretty active at this time of the day! Keen to get a closer glimpse? We highly recommend a morning dolphin sea kayak tour where you’ll get the chance to see bottlenose dolphins up close in their natural habitat.
Hinterland Day Out
Just a short drive from Byron, you’ll find Byron Bay’s Hinterland. This area is so beautiful, with ancient rainforests, cute villages and rolling green hills. Spend a day here, hiking through the bush and finding hidden waterfalls (Killen Falls is one of our favourites).
Treehouse on Belongil
For a well deserved brekkie, head to Treehouse on Belongil. Their famous Bacon and Egg Breakfast Tacos are the mother of all hangover cures. Wash it all down with a smoothie and a coffee and you’ll be back in the game in no time!
Top Shop Byron Bay
Another fan favourite, Top Shop Byron Bay offers delicious brekkies and amazing coffee in an oh-so-wholesome setting. Find your group a spot on the grass and settle in for a bellyful of quality grub and a good dose of vitamin D in the sunshine.
AFTERNOON: BEST SPOTS TO EXPLORE IN THE ARVO
There’s no better way to shake off a night on the town than with a salty dip in the ocean. With some of the most beautiful, Insta-worthy beaches IN. THE. WORLD, Byron has your afternoon covered.
For an easy stroll, start at Byron’s Main Beach, just a 50m walk from The Surf House. From here, take a right turn and follow the track to local favourite, Wategos Beach. At low tide, you can walk along the shore the whole way.
For a longer walk, fill a backpack with picnic goods and keep going all the way to Tallow Beach, through Arakwal National Park. More secluded, but simply stunning, you’ll be well-rewarded for your hiking efforts!
You can’t visit Byron without trying out the local surf. Take advantage of The Surf House’s surfboard and boogie board hire (complimentary for Schoolies guests). Belongil Beach is our pick for the best beginner waves for those learning to surf!
Remember to leave some space in your luggage, because there’s no shortage of boutiques here in Byron Bay. Explore some of Australia’s best boutique shops that feature local fashion labels like Spell, Afends and Thrill. Keep meandering through the streets for unique homewares and eco stores, too.
Check out the local markets, rotating weekly throughout the area’s towns. Our favourites include:
- Byron Community Market – 1st Sunday of the month (Week 3 of Schoolies)
- Byron Farmers Market – every Thursday morning (Weeks 1, 2 and 3 of Schoolies)
- Bangalow Market – 4th Sunday of the month (Week 2 of Schoolies)
No trip to Byron is complete without a visit to The Farm. A magical, sustainable foodie spot set on – you guessed it…a farm, with the most perfectly Instagrammable backdrop. Say hello to the pigs, chooks and horses, wander past the sunflower fields, and finally settle in for lunch with The Farm’s fresh produce sourced directly from the land.
LATE NIGHT: BARS AND BEATS TO ENJOY WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN
Chilled out vibes by day, party vibes at night. Get ready, because Byron comes alive when the sun goes down.
Happy Hour Drinks
Take advantage of Happy Hour on The Surf House’s rooftop, Byron’s only rooftop bar. The Rooftop Bar is accessible exclusively for guests staying in-house (18+ only), so you’re in for a good night. With amazing drink and pizza specials, the rooftop is the perfect spot to enjoy a bite to eat and some golden hour bevvies with your Schoolies group before you hit the town.
Known to locals as ‘Miss Margs’, this colourful Mexican cantina serves up cold beers, amazing margaritas and happy vibes all round. Guaranteed to get you in the party mood.
Woody’s Surf Shack
When it comes to partying, Woody’s Surf Shack is a guaranteed good time. Iconic 70’s surf shack style, pumping beats, and drink specials every night make Woody’s one of our all-time favourite bars in the Bay. Woody’s is open every night of the week so you can party all week long.
Keen for a more chilled one? Local favourite, ‘Rails’ (The Rails Hotel) offers great food and live music every night from their open beer garden. Grab a brew or a dinner any night of the week and soak up the laid-back atmosphere.
